The -तर/-तम forms are Sanskrit-derived and mainly seen in formal or literary Hindi. In everyday speech, people use से ज़्यादा (more than) and सबसे (most): वह मुझसे ज़्यादा लंबा है (he is taller than me), वह सबसे लंबा है (he is the tallest).
