Terms of Use

These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of the Desi Lingo website at desi-lingo.app and the Desi Lingo browser extension (collectively, the "Service"). By using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Desi Lingo is a Hindi language learning tool. It provides a browser extension that makes Hindi text interactive on webpages and video platforms (YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video), a web dashboard for tracking vocabulary, reviewing mined sentences, and managing settings, and an Anki desktop add-on for syncing mined sentences into Anki.

2. Accounts

You need an account to use most features of the Service. You may sign in using Google OAuth or email verification. You are responsible for maintaining the security of your account and for all activity that occurs under it.

Use one account across all your devices. There is no way to merge accounts, and vocabulary progress is tied to a single account.

3. Free Trial & Subscriptions

Desi Lingo offers a 7-day free trial with full feature access. No credit card is required for the trial. After the trial period, a paid subscription is required to access certain features.

Subscriptions are billed through Lemon Squeezy. By subscribing, you agree to Lemon Squeezy's terms of service in addition to these Terms. You may cancel your subscription at any time through your account settings or the Lemon Squeezy customer portal. All payments are final and non-refundable. Because a full-featured free trial is provided before any payment is required, no refunds will be issued for subscription charges.

4. Acceptable Use

You agree not to:

  • Reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble the extension or web application.
  • Use automated tools (bots, scrapers) to access the Service in a way that exceeds normal usage.
  • Attempt to gain unauthorized access to other users' accounts or data.
  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose.
  • Redistribute, resell, or sublicense any part of the Service.

5. Dictionary Data & Content

The Desi Lingo dictionary includes data from multiple open-source and open-licensed sources:

  • Wiktionary data extracted via Kaikki.org, licensed under CC BY-SA 4.0.
  • FreeDict eng-hin dictionary, licensed under GPL v2.
  • Open-source Hindi-English dataset from public domain sources.
  • Original hand-written definitions created by Desi Lingo.

Dictionary definitions are provided for educational purposes. While we strive for accuracy, we do not guarantee that every definition is complete or error-free.

6. Intellectual Property

The Desi Lingo name, logo, extension code, web application code, and original content (including hand-written definitions) are the property of Desi Lingo. Open-source dictionary data retains its original licensing as noted above.

Your learning data (word statuses, mined sentences, notes) remains yours. You can export it at any time and request deletion of your account.

7. Third-Party Platforms

The browser extension interacts with third-party platforms (YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video) to provide interactive subtitle overlays. Desi Lingo is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Google, Netflix, or Amazon.

Your use of these platforms is governed by their respective terms of service. Desi Lingo does not modify, store, or redistribute video content from these platforms.

8. Disclaimer of Warranties

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. We do not guarantee that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that dictionary data will be perfectly accurate.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Desi Lingo shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages arising from your use of the Service, including but not limited to loss of data, loss of profits, or interruption of service.

10. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time if you violate these Terms. You may stop using the Service and request account deletion at any time by contacting us.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
